Our Position

Common Ground Research Networks believes firmly in the principles of open and accessible knowledge. For over 30 years we have been at the forefront of developing innovative models for scholarly communication which reflect new knowledge ecologies. Our mission has been to lower the cost of access, while sustaining the independence and resilience of our Research Networks. We have a commitment to support the research produced by our members and the livelihoods of our staff and industry within which we work.

All works published Open Access are available in one central location — Common Ground Open @ CGScholar.

The CGScholar platform is developed by the Common Ground Media Lab, the research and technology arm of Common Ground Research Networks. CGScholar is a platform that seeks to become a trusted marketplace for knowledge work, one that rigorously democratizes the process of knowledge-making, rewards participants, and offers a secure basis for the sustainable creation and distribution of digital knowledge artifacts.

Transformative Agreements as a Pathway to Open Access

Many researchers must publish open access as part of their funding agreement. If your institution has a Read and Publish Agreement with Common Ground Research Networks, you can publish your article gold OA at no cost to you. And at the same time, you can also enjoy access to subscribed journal content. With a Read and Publish Agreement, libraries and funders enjoy the simplicity of a single price, and scholars get seamless open access publication.

Read and Publish Agreement – General Framework

For Researchers:

  • only the corresponding author needs to belong to an institution with a Read & Publish deal
  • no fees or invoices, we’ll confirm your institution has an agreement at the Membership / Rights phase of the publishing workflow
  • Applied to articles accepted between 1 January and 31 December

For Librarians or Funders

  • one simple annual fee tailored to your institution full access to journal articles
  • one-year deal with flexible and transparent review allowing for adaptation in the following years

If your institution subscribes to our journals and your researchers regularly publish with us, you can gain extra value from moving to a Read & Publish model.
Contact us and we’ll be happy to calculate your tailored Read and Publish agreement or discuss any other transformative models that you wish to explore: subscriptions@cgnetworks.org

More Choice

  • Common Ground supports three publication models, each with greater openness than the next.
  • Our Traditional Publication Model is the default method of publication. Traditional publications are classified by SHERPA/RoMEO as Yellow in the RoMEO database.
  • Our Open Access and Premium Open Access Publication Models allow archiving of the publisher's version/PDF and all versions prior.

More Freedom

  • Common Ground Open has no embargo period.
  • Authors and their supporting institutions have the power to upgrade the publication model and expand the permissions for archiving, distribution, and re-use at any time.
  • The upgrade to open access can occur in-press or post-publication.

More Access

  • Our upgraded publication models offer two types of open access publication: Open Access (CC BY-NC-ND) or Premium Open Access (CC BY). Both open access options use a Creative Commons international license. We encourage authors to visit the Creative Commons and learn about the different types of open access.
  • A detailed account of the permissions for archiving, distribution, and re-use under the terms of these three separate publication models is available in the CGScholar Knowledge Base, see Common Ground's Journal Author Rights & Permissions.
