FAQ - Books

We believe that books remain one of the most powerful ways to share enduring ideas. Our publishing program supports authors whose work fosters critical engagement, interdisciplinary inquiry, and democratic dialogue.

From single-author monographs to edited collections and book series, we collaborate with writers, editors, and curators to build communities of scholarship. Whether publishing traditionally or through Open Access, our goal is to amplify research that matters—to academia and to the world.

Our Mission

What is the mission of Common Ground Books?

We publish scholarship that encourages critical engagement, interdisciplinary exploration, and productive democratic discourse. Our goal is to connect research with public life and to support authors whose work educates within and beyond the classroom.

What defines our publishing philosophy?

We are guided by integrity, quality, and accessibility. We believe books should serve as platforms for scholarly rigor and public understanding.

Are we an independent publisher?

Yes. From our beginnings in Australia to our home in the University of Illinois Research Park, we have remained independent and scholar-led, guided by ideas rather than market pressures.

Who can publish with us?

We welcome proposals from authors at all career stages—faculty, researchers, practitioners, and independent scholars—seeking to engage academic and general audiences.

What kinds of manuscripts are we looking for?

We publish single- and multi-author monographs, edited collections, and new scholarly introductions to classic works. We seek original, interdisciplinary projects that advance knowledge and spark dialogue.

Are there manuscripts you do not accept?

We do not publish fiction or unaltered theses. If you are adapting a thesis, it must be revised for a general scholarly audience—restructured, rewritten, and contextualized for broader impact.

How do I submit a book proposal?

Download the Book Proposal Form, prepare your materials (CVs, sample chapters, permissions if applicable), and email the package to books@cgnetworks.org with the subject line: Book Proposal: [Working Title] — [Lead Author/Editor]

What happens after submission?

Proposals undergo internal editorial review for originality, scholarly merit, and relevance. Approved projects advance to peer review and contract discussions.

What is included in the publishing process?

Accepted manuscripts progress through typesetting, copyediting, and design. Our editors ensure accuracy, stylistic consistency, and clear presentation for both print and digital formats.

What happens after publication?

Publication begins an ongoing relationship. We continue to support authors with paperback editions, translations, licensing, and other adaptation opportunities.

Book Imprints

How do imprints differ from traditional subject categories?

Our imprints are built around conversations rather than disciplines—cross-disciplinary, globally engaged, and socially relevant.

What unites all Common Ground Imprints?

A commitment to ideas that matter—books that invite dialogue, foster understanding, and contribute to a more informed and connected global society.

How are books selected for an imprint?

Every manuscript is reviewed for scholarly merit, originality, and fit within the imprint’s thematic scope. Selection follows peer review and editorial consultation.
