CMS 18th ed. Author-Date Guide

Journal articles need to be formatted in the journal’s template and use Chicago Manual of Style (CMS) Author-Date (18th ed.) rules for references and in-text citations. Please note that CMS requires each type of reference to use a specific format; examples are provided below.

References and Citations

Articles must follow the Chicago Manual of Style and use the Author Date format.

Basics

Reference List:
  • Entries should be in title case, meaning that each word (other than short prepositions, conjunctions, and articles) should begin with an uppercase/capital letter.
  • Use full first names of authors where possible.
  • Second and subsequent authors should be in Firstname Lastname order.
  • Publication dates should not be in parentheses.
  • Please use the CMS parenthetical method for journal article entries: Journal Name 82 (4): 17–28.
  • Entries for journal articles should include a DOI, beginning with https://doi.org/10...
  • Entries for web articles should include the name of the website, month and day that the article was published, and a URL.
  • Location/city of publisher no longer needed in book references (new to CMS 18).
  • For entries with more than six authors, use only the first three in the reference followed by et al. (new to CMS 18).
  • Material accessed via the web with no stable date clearly marked on the website should list n.d. (for no date) in place of the year of publication and should include an accessed date.
  • Entries for non-English titles need to supply an English translation in square brackets following the title of the work.
In-text Citations:
  • Use the word “and” rather than the ampersand (&).
  • There should be no comma before the year of publication.
  • Citations with more than two authors should use the first author’s last name followed by et al. (new to CMS 18).
  • For multiple citations within the same parentheses, please use a semicolon to separate.
  • Include a page number only when citing a direct quotation.
