Extra events

Social events sit alongside the formal program and give a conference its informal rhythm. The Extra events tab is where a conference lists them — and some of them run online.

Where to look

Extra events is the sixth tab on a conference, between Presentations and Registrations. Some conferences also list them on their own website.

Check the tab again nearer the dates. Extras are usually announced with the programme rather than when registration opens.

What tends to be on

  • Social gatherings — a reception, a dinner, an evening somewhere other than the venue
  • Local site visits — a studio, a collection, a building, a city, wherever the host institution can take you
  • Discussion extensions — sessions that carry a conversation past the end of the programme

What is offered depends on the host institution and the city, so it changes every year. Nothing here is guaranteed at every conference.

The two that run online

Two extras recur across conferences and both are online, which means neither depends on being in the host city.

  • A welcome and training session, before the conference opens — how the platform works, and how to put media on your profile. Worth an hour if it is your first CGScholar conference
  • A talking circle, during it — facilitated, and a chance to meet other delegates face to face and talk for longer than a question allows

If you are attending online, these are your social programme.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Extra events tab is empty

Likely too early. Extras are announced with the programme rather than when registration opens — look again nearer the dates.

I am attending online. Is any of this for me?

Yes. The welcome and training session and the talking circle both run online, and for an online delegate they are the social programme.

Do extras cost anything?

It depends on the conference and the event. Where a charge or a booking applies, it is stated with the event on the Extra events tab.

Is the training session worth attending?

If it is your first CGScholar conference, yes. It covers finding your way around and putting media on your profile — the things this guide describes, demonstrated by a person.

Will the same extras run next year?

Not necessarily. They depend on the host institution and the city, and both change from one conference to the next.
